United Arab Emirates Etiquette

#

While Dubai isn’t nearly as strict as you may have been led to believe, there are some laws and differences in etiquette that you need to be aware of before you go. First and foremost, dress conservatively. When in public, always ensure your clothing reaches at the very least just above the knee and ensure your shoulders are covered. Swimwear is acceptable at the pool area and the beach. But keep in mind that holding hands, kissing and cuddling between couples is strictly forbidden in public and is considered unlawful.

During the holy month of Ramadan you cannot eat, drink, smoke, chew gum, etc., in public between sunrise and sunset. Alcohol, contrary to popular belief is available in the UAE, but its restricted to hotels and special “clubs”, though imbibing in public, or during the holy hours of Ramadan is forbidden.
