The Shwedagon Paya

The Shwedagon Paya

This is one of Buddhism’s most sacred of sites. It sits in Yangon and can be seen from almost every angle of the city. It is a 2,500 year old, gold plated Pagoda, which enshrines several strands of the Buddha’s hair and many other Buddhist relics. The top of the Shwedagon stupa is encrusted with exactly 4531 diamonds – the largest of which is 72 carats. That’s not all – there are more than 2000 rubies too, as well as sapphires and other gems. You’ll come face-to-face with thousands of years of culture and history, this is where religions come to life – the sights on offer here are overwhelming.
