Not to miss in Sri Lanka

Not to miss in Sri Lanka

Take a little time here and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful colonial buildings, vibrant markets and lengths of beautiful beachfront. When you wonder Colombo’s streets, you’ll find a city that collects all of the cultures, scents, colours and sounds of greater Sri Lanka and condenses them into one exciting city which layers modernity with the arts, fine dining with cultural heritage and intertwining histories with scenic beaches.

Climb the Lion Rock

Sigiriya or the The Lion Rock rises is located in the cultural triangle formed by Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy – which is home to 5 of Sri Lanka’s incredible 8 UNESCO listed World Heritage sites. Reach the citadel by ascending the 1200 steps to the summit and once there you’ll be in awe of the incredible caves, temples and rugged rock formations as well as the ancient frescoes on the cave walls.

Visit Kandy

The easy-going city of Kandy is filled to bursting with a wonderful collection of architecture, which spans colonial and traditional Sri Lankan. Once there you’ll find a quaint market, which is always bustling and a picturesque lake (lake Kandy) in the middle of town – all of which is surrounded by acres of lush countryside. Don’t miss the Temple of the Tooth – which is home to the infamous and Sacred Buddha’s tooth relic.

Dambulla Cave Temples

Take a peak inside these 5 cave temples – filled with Sri Lankan Buddhist Art, colourful Murals and a wonderful collection of shrines and statues. Be sure not to miss the Cave of the Great Kings which along with the 50+ statues of Buddha are the gods Saman and Vishnu, and the Kings Vattagamani Abhaya and Nissanka Malla.

Taste a pot of Sri Lankan Tea

Sri Lanka is of course home to the world-renowned Ceylon tea (Sri Lanka was known as Ceylon until the 1970’s) – head to the Bluefield Tea Gardens to taste some, as well as to gain an introduction into traditional tea making methods.
