Cuisine of Zimbabwe

Cuisine of Zimbabwe

Like many African countries, Zimbabweans depend on staple foods such as cornmeal and locally grown meats. However, as Zimbabwe was once a British colony, Zimbabweans have adopted some English habits – from eating all kinds of porridges for breakfast to sandwiches for lunch, and of course there’s afternoon tea which is served a couple of hours before dinner, as is traditional.

A favourite maize preparation is bona, which is a breakfast porridge made by mixing cornmeal with water into a paste which is then flavoured with butter or peanut butter. Rice is popular in the cities throughout Zimbabwe, especially served with chicken with coleslaw salad is often served as the main meal.

Graduations, weddings, and other family celebrations are often celebrated with the killing of a goat, a sheep or sometimes a cow, which will then be barbecued for the entire family to enjoy.
