One of Mexico’s best cities to experience the country’s indigenous culture, Oaxaca has a vibrant crafts and art scene, delicious cuisine and a diverse collection of natural riches. At its centre stands the colonial Unesco-listed Oaxaca city, a fascinating cultural hub filled with ornate churches, peaceful streets and age old markets. If you feel like getting into the wilderness then take a trip to the forested Sierra Norte, which is a good option for hiking, biking and horse riding. Beach lovers should instead travel south to Oaxaca’s tropical coast to luxuriate on its wide sandy beaches, and plunge into the energetic Pacific surf, which along with swimmers is full of dolphins and turtles. Surfers should head straight to Puerto Escondido, while those looking for something more relaxed should spend the day on Bahías de Huatulco.
