Founded more than 2000 years ago by Alexander the Great, Alexandria is the stuff of mystery and legend. The city was once the home of the Pharos lighthouse that marked the ancient harbour entrance, and the Great Library which was once considered the archive of ancient knowledge. Today you’ll have to make do with the reimagined version of the library – the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which is a stunning piece of modernist architecture filled with some of Egypt’s most impressive treasures and rare manuscripts.
